थोडक्यात

Kaal Sarp Dosha (also called Kaal Sarpa Dosha, Kaal Sarp Dosh, or Kala Sarpa Yoga) is one of the most feared yogas in Vedic Astrology. It is a planetary pattern in the birth chart (Janma Kundli) that is believed to bring obstacles, struggles, and delays in life.

How It Forms

The dosha occurs when all seven major planets — Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), and Saturn (Shani) — are placed between the two shadow planets Rahu and Ketu.

There are 12 types based on the house positions of Rahu and Ketu:

TypeRahuKetu
Anant1st house7th house
Kulik2nd house8th house
Vasuki3rd house9th house
Shankhpal4th house10th house
Padma5th house11th house
Takshak6th house12th house

The remaining 6 types follow the same pattern for houses 7–12 (Rahu) with corresponding Ketu placements.

Effects

  • Delays in career growth and promotions
  • Obstacles in education and marriage
  • Chronic health issues
  • Financial instability or losses
  • Mental stress, fear, or anxiety

Intensity varies by chart and must be assessed individually.

Who is Affected

Anyone whose birth chart shows all seven major planets confined within the Rahu–Ketu axis. The specific type and severity depend on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy and the overall chart context.

Exceptions & Cancellation Rules

  • Hemming broken by conjunction: if any one planet is exactly conjunct Rahu or Ketu (within ~3°), the enclosure is considered broken and the dosha substantially weakens — the node is no longer acting in isolation at the axis endpoint
  • Any one planet outside the Rahu–Ketu axis nullifies the classical formation entirely (no longer "all seven hemmed")
  • Jupiter in a Kendra from Lagna or Moon materially reduces the dosha's intensity
  • Benefic aspects on the Rahu–Ketu axis, or on the houses they occupy, soften outcomes
  • Partial Kaal Sarp (planets hemmed on one side with some stragglers loose) produces milder, more localized effects rather than pervasive obstruction
  • Not all Kaal Sarp charts produce negative results — some confer intense focus, spiritual depth, and non-linear, dramatic achievement (many public figures carry some form of this configuration)
  • The specific houses Rahu and Ketu occupy determine which life areas feel the pressure; the dosha rarely affects all areas equally

Remedies

  • Perform Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran Puja at sacred sites: Trimbakeshwar (Nashik), Ujjain, or Kalahasti
  • Worship Lord Shiva; recite the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
  • Chant Rahu and Ketu Beej Mantras
  • Offer prayers on Nag Panchami and Mondays
  • Feed birds and cows; donate black items such as sesame seeds or blankets
