Kendradhipati Dosha

সংক্ষেপে

Kendradhipati Dosha (the "angle-lordship blemish") is a technical modifier in Indian Vedic Astrology that describes how a natural benefic planet loses part of its auspicious power when it rules a Kendra (angular) house — the 4th, 7th, or 10th.

What is This Dosha?

Kendradhipati Dosha (the "angle-lordship blemish") is a technical modifier in Indian Vedic Astrology that describes how a natural benefic planet loses part of its auspicious power when it rules a Kendra (angular) house — the 4th, 7th, or 10th. The word breaks down as Kendra (angle) + adhipati (lord) + dosha (blemish). It is not a calamity-causing affliction like Mangal or Pitra Dosha; rather, it is a functional adjustment that mutes a benefic's ability to deliver purely positive results.

The underlying principle (from Parashara) is that responsibility for the visible pillars of life — home, partnership, career — is "heavy" enough that it dampens a gentle benefic's natural generosity, while it actually disciplines a harsh malefic into productive service.

How It Forms

The dosha attaches to a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, unafflicted Mercury) when it rules a Kendra (4, 7, 10) without also ruling a Trikona (1, 5, 9) from the Lagna. The strength of the blemish scales with the natural benevolence of the planet — Jupiter is affected most, then Venus, then Mercury.

Examples: - Jupiter for Gemini / Virgo Lagnas (rules the 7th and 10th) → Kendradhipati Dosha - Venus for Aries / Scorpio Lagnas (rules the 7th) → Kendradhipati Dosha - Moon for Aries Lagna (rules the 4th) → Kendradhipati Dosha

By contrast, natural malefics (Saturn, Mars) ruling Kendras experience the reverse — they shed malevolence and gain functional benefic status. This is why Saturn becomes a yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra Lagnas.

Effects

  • The afflicted benefic does not become malefic, but its capacity to deliver clean, purely positive results is reduced.
  • Results from the planet's Dasha and house placements tend to be mixed — benefit arrives with friction or delay.
  • It weakens any Yoga the planet participates in: a Raj Yoga formed by a Kendradhipati-afflicted benefic is less potent than one formed by an unblemished functional benefic.
  • It is a key input when classifying a planet as a functional benefic vs. functional malefic for a given Lagna.

Modifying & Cancellation Conditions

  • Simultaneous Trikona lordship overrides the dosha entirely. If the same planet rules both a Kendra and a Trikona, it becomes a powerful yogakaraka instead — e.g., Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius Lagnas, Saturn for Taurus and Libra Lagnas.
  • A planet that is otherwise very strong (own sign, exalted, well-aspected) experiences a milder version of the blemish.
  • The dosha is a relative weighting, not an absolute block; it should always be read alongside the planet's overall dignity and the chart's other yogas.

Relationship to the Ascendant / Lagna

Kendradhipati Dosha is entirely Lagna-dependent — the very same planet that suffers the dosha for one ascendant can be a yogakaraka for another. Functional status must therefore be resolved for the specific Lagna before applying any generic interpretation of the planet's results. Timing: When Does It Manifest?

The muted, mixed quality shows up during the Mahadasha and Antardasha of the afflicted benefic, and when that planet is activated by transit through sensitive houses. The native typically still receives the planet's gifts, but accompanied by obstacles, delays, or strings attached, rather than the effortless flow an unblemished benefic would provide.
